Barrilee Bannister

Bio

Barrilee Bannister was one of seventy-eight women sent to a male prison in Arizona run by the Corrections Corporation of America, where they were sexually assaulted and harassed by male staff. Barrilee organized the women, contacted the media and launched a lawsuit, which resulted in their return to Oregon, a public apology and the firing and disciplining of many of the involved guards. She has been released from Coffee Creek Correctional Facility, Oregon’s only women’s prison. She is the founder and co-editor of the quarterly zine “Tenacious: Writings from Women in Prison”.
